croatia property rentalSplit is the second largest city in Croatia, after Zagreb, and is the largest city in the Dalmatia region. With a population of about 200,000 people the city is an important transport hub for the region, as well as a very popular tourist destination.

In our opinion, the city is simply stunning and we would have no hesitation in recommending a holiday here. The city is centered around the ancient Roman Palace of the Emperor Diocletian who had the palace built as a holiday/retirement "home". After the Emperor Diocletian died the Palace was still regularly used by other Roman Emperors and we cant blame them as the city is very special. The Greeks, Romans, Austrians and the Slavs (among others) have all occupied Split for some period throughout history so it is no wonder that the city is steeped in history and culture. Split is a city that is sure to bring out the photographer in you. It is no surprise that the historic centre of Split was included into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.

While the culture and history of the city is unavoidable, Split has plenty more to offer. Set against a dramatic backdrop of mountains and along the beautiful Adriatic Coast there is something to suit everybody's vacation needs. The famous Bacvice beach is only a short walk from the city where you can enjoy some sunbathing and watch the locals play picigin (a local game) in the warm and shallow waters. Naturally, there are many other areas along the coast where you can lie out and enjoy the sun.

A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1979

The Riva, Split's waterfront promenade, provides the focal point for much of the life around Split. There are numerous cafes and restaurants along the Riva where you can relax with a coffee and soak up the unique Split atmosphere. The Bacvice area is also popular for food and drink as you can take in the beautiful views from most of the restaurants.

If you feel you have over indulged in some of the beautiful restaurants the city has to offer we would recommend a walk up Marjan hill (178m high). It is to the western side of the promenade and once conquered you will be rewarded with beautiful views of Split and the Dalmatian coast. Another reason why we love Split is the access to the rest of the islands it offers. Day trips to Brac, Ciovo, Hvar, Solta and Vis can be recommended to make your stay in Croatia that little bit more special.
